Single Entrance Exam for Engineering and Architecture across India from 2018
#1
In its directions to AICTE on Feb 10, 2017, the ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has set stage for a "single" national-level Engineering and Architecture entrance test. In nutshell, single exam for every college and every field of Engineering & Architecture for "undergraduate courses". This single exam is expected to be effective from 2018 onwards.

In line with the international tests like SAT/GRE, the test shall be conducted multiple times a year (frequency yet to be decided) and it intends to bring uniformity in academic standards.

Respecting the lingual diversity of India, the test will be conducted in atleast 10 languages.

Worth noting is that IITs will continue to hold their independent entrance exam owing to their standardised process of screening and admission.

In the current state of art, most states conduct their own engineering examination and in many cases, no test is conducted and admissions are done purely on the basis of Class XII marks, while engineering colleges in some (five) states accept JEE (mains) score for admission.

As per MHRD, there are more than 3,200 engineering colleges across 27 states in India, majority being in 5 states namely Tamil Nadu (>500), Maharashtra (>350), Andhra Pradesh (>300), Uttar Pradesh (~300) and Madhya Pradesh (~200). A single test will indeed bring huge uniformity in admission standards.

MHRD has requested all state governments/deemed universities "to communicate their constructive suggestions for smooth implementation of the regulation. It may also be useful to request as many institutions as possible to come under a joint seat-allocation system for a more efficient seat allocation process".

It's definitely a great move which will help students to assess their eligibility across the country in a uniform and easy way. Looking forward to this great change.
