For the pathway alteration, first you need to choose any product like primary metabolite (alcohol, citric acid etc.) or secondary metabolite (antibiotics) then you need to understand the conventional pathway for the same. Once you understand the mechanism then you can inhibit the formation of by product, leading to maximum product yield.
