I am pursuing b.tech in biotechnology from lovely professional university. This is my last year, i have decided to crack GATE-BT 2016 exam. Right now i am very confused what to do M.tech or phd . My teachers are advising me to do phd because it has two benefits (income+degree). Since 9th standard i have decided that i will go in research and i am very interested in practicing research in genetics and recombinant DNA technology. I am giving 100% to gate but i will also give DBT JRF and CSIR NET . I always read your posts and answers they are very motivational please help me if i will not be able to clear any exam then what will i do? In which industries i can try my luck or i have to drop one year for gate. Private sector will not give me too much they will not allow me to do research .I know i should think positive but please tell me in which direction i should go, please clarify me.
My current cgpa-8.1/10
Thanks & Regards

Hi Sonal,
Apologies for the delayed response (was over occupied with work to give a settled response).
First of all you don't need to worry a lot (worry to little extent is helpful, not an excess of it).
LPU was my alma mater too, so nice to have a query from someone from LPU. If research has been your line of interest then I'll suggest you to follow the advice of your teachers and go for PhD. But my recommendation here would be to apply at NUS and HKTU as well, apart from applying at Indian Universities/Institutes. Once you clear GATE you will be eligible for NUS and HKTU. Apply there as well as in India (as a back-up). Pranjal, one of my juniors from LPU, is pursuing his PhD from NUS right after B.Tech from LPU. He should be a motivation to go for it.
Now, what if you don't clear any exam (it won't happen if you put a smart effort), but if it happens, then apply for RAships in various research labs (CSIR labs keep offering RAships and JRF walkins). Companies like PREMAS in Gurgaon would be good for your area of interest. Try Wockhardt and Praj industries too. HUL and FCI(govt. jobs) would be good bets too.
As of now, your focus should be on preparing for the exams. Take one step at a time. Work smart and success shall be there to greet you!
Let me know if you have any other query.
Best wishes
Sunil
