Hi Ashmita (and everyone who are confused about JMP),
There's no obligation for PhD in the JMP program, you can very well decide after completion of 1st year, whether or not to opt for PhD. In fact, the continuation to PhD is conditional to your performance (in terms of CGPA, which must be > 9.0 for PhD) in 1st year.
This provision for enrolling in PhD after 1st year is there in almost every IIT. And even if you have CGPA > 9.0 after 1st year, it very much depends upon the availability of Project(s) and extent of competition for limited PhD seats.
Hope it helps
Best wishes
Sunil
Looking forward to your experience(s) and success story(ies).
