I want to make career in this field but little bit confused which sector of biology is good to approach for my better future scope. I am confused between agricultural and Food Biotechnology, Veterinary Sciences. So, please suggest me which one is better and I how can I pursue it.

All of the above disciplines have good job prospects in India and abroad. You can pursue any of the field as per your interest. At the end of the you should bw satisfied with your work place.

AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY:

With a billion-plus mouths to feed, and counting, crop biotechnology has to be a natural winner in priority terms for a country like India, especially in the era of climate change, degradation of farmlands, increased soil salinity, due to drop in groundwater as well as pollution of surface water sources, more frequent droughts and so on.

Biotechnology is used in many ways in agriculture. Agricultural biotechnology companies work to supply farmers with tools to increase the yield of plant and animal products, while lowering the costs of production.

Agricultural biotechnology can also include production of plants such as orchids for ornamental purposes and plants that can be used for fuel production (biofuels).

India is also crowded with Research Labs of Agriculture(you will find a commercial research lab as well an academic research lab in almost every city!!), There are many opportunities in agriculture based private companies. There are also ample opportunities for agricultural biotechnologists in PAU, IARI,HAU, like institutes.

You can pursue BSc or B.Tech in Agriculture Biotechnology Or Biotechnology , IIT kharagpur offers B.Tech and M.Tech - PhD Integrated in Agricultural Biotechnology.

FOOD BIOTECHNOLOGY:

India is crowded with Food and Beverage companies (to feed the nation).

The emergence of various lifestyle diseases, as well as the market getting clogged with all kinds of products that are generally unhealthy or contain elements of genetic modification not suited to Indian health conditions, has become a surce of concern.

Along with that certain diseases such as anaemia, diarrhoea etc, which are endemic in the country, calls for a focussed to food and nutritional research as well as product development.

There are good chances of getting into food industry in india.

VETERINARY SCIENCES :

Veterinary Science is the science of diagnosing, treating and curing the diverse types of diseases in birds and animals. A veterinarian's primary responsibility is to look after the health and welfare of the animals. Besides giving treatment, Vets perform surgery prevent spreading of diseases in animals by administering timely vaccination and medicines and give advice on care of pets and farm animals. Their activities may also include Animal husbandry- animal breed improvement by 'selection breeding' and artificial insemination, animal research in order to control spread of diseases transmitted through animals. The job also includes wildlife conservation, poultry management and health care.

Job Prospects

Veterinarians can choose to work with the government animal husbandry departments, poultry farms, dairy farms, sheep and rabbit farms, piggery farms race clubs, stud farms, private and government veterinary hospitals and clinics. Dairy research institutes also require the services of veterinarians. Private practices of vets can flourish very well in urban areas. The government also employs veterinarians as public health professionals whose services are utilized in zoos, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

The Defense Services use horses, dogs, camels, etc. and therefore need the services of veterinarians. Various zoological research institutes employ veterinarians to conduct research and development in various departments. Veterinarians also can join academic institutions as a teaching faculty. Postgraduates in veterinary science can go in for further research and development in this sector.

Colleges :

Several technical institutions and universities are offering various courses in Veterinary sciences. Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Uttar Pradesh; College of Veterinary Sciences, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar; Bombay Veterinary Science College, Mumbai; College of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (Anand Agricultural University), Anand, All India Institute Of Hygiene And Public Health, Kolkata; Chandra Shekar Azad University Of Agriculture And Technology, Kanpur;; Jawharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Jabalpur; Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary & Animal Sciences (PGIVAS), Akola.

Course Details :

To be eligible for the Bachelor's in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc & AH) course, a candidate should have passed the class 12 examination with science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Admission to most veterinary courses is made on the basis of entrance examination AIPVT.
