Hello sir, I would like to know when to start for the preparations for IIT JAM as I am in my first year B.Sc and also I would like to know whether bioinformatics is a right option for M.Sc without any software basics in UG level?

Hello Rangu,
If you sincerely make efforts for conceptual understanding of the subjects you are studying, then clearing IIT JAM would appear a cake walk. Keep an eye on the syllabus of IIT JAM, and look into the subjects which are mentioned in the syllabus. Just sincerely make efforts to understand the subjects you are currently studying in line with the syllabus of JAM.
From 2nd year onwards, start revising 1-2 topics a day from the syllabus of JAM. 3-6 months prior to the exam, focus your attention on previous year papers and mock tests.
And about MSc in Bionfo, it's suggested to pursue atleast 1 subject/training/project related to Bioinfo in BSc, to have a comfortable and interesting MSc in Bioinfo. Softwares used in Bioinfo aren't out of the world, they are easy to adept to,..so you shouldn't be worried about that. But a conceptual understanding of Bioinformatics is recommended; and hence I suggest you to pursue a course and a project in Bioinfo during your BSc, if you want to make a career out of it.
There is nothing better than the personal notes made from the standard books. Considering the fact that you have ample time for IIT JAM, start working on the topics mentioned in the syllabus (apart from previous year papers) and make notes of important points in the form of small portable booklets (which you can keep along while travelling/moving).

Hi Tarique,
The books you are referring are perfectly fine. You may refer the following link as well (GATE BT/XL and JAM have considerable similarities in books to use): http://in.biotechstudents.com/gate-biote...cts-books/
I will be posting a full fledged thread for syllabus right after this response.
