Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology jointly conduct GATE or The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering every year. Every aspiring engineering students seeking for higher education take this exam very seriously as their career heavily depends on the success at GATE.

There are many factors on which success in GATE depends. So one should take this examination seriously as well as methodically to achieve this goal.
To be fare, three to four months of methodical and serious study should be enough for proper preparation for this examination. But, the correct strategy is very important and that should be chalked out well before starting the preparation. This is especially important for final year B Tech students as they have to balance their final semester studies with GATE preparation.

Procuring the syllabus and correct books are very important after selecting the subject that best suits you in every aspect. While selecting books always try to have a combination of the basic conceptual text book along with some guidebooks and specific problem solvers. Getting the previous years question papers is a must.
Going for books which can be grasped easily is always advisable as proper understanding of the concepts is vital for success in GATE. Taking help of coaching centers of repute or other experienced persons is not a bad idea. Memorizing the basic concepts with definitions, theories, formulae, units, dimensions, etc. will be the key to your success.

The next thing one should give stress on is problem solving. Try to solve out as many problems as possible during preparation and also keep an eye on the time. Time is a critical factor in every competitive examination and GATE is no exception. There are many handy tricks and tips available during calculation of problems which will save you a lot of time at exam hall and be aware of those.

Practice the same problems again and again and conduct periodical self tests. You should prepare in a manner so that you should complete the whole syllabus before a month of the examination date. This will give you enough time to make a complete revision of the syllabus before the examination. If you could achieve this you will have a very good chance of registering a good GATE score. Along with self test you can also opt for mock tests conducted many centers.
Now that you are well prepared for your examination, you should never panic. Reach the examination hall well in advance and before leaving home check for your admit card and other necessary objects. Try to answer Section A first (each question carrying 1 marks) followed by Section B (subjective, each question carrying 2 marks). Only answer the known question and try to avoid answering questions which you are not sure about. This will help you avoid negative markings as attempting answers by too much guess work seldom works. Stay calm and composed and never give unnecessary time to any question.
