New drugs could help combat obesity
#2
Obesity treatment is gaining its importance with increase in number of cases and related side effects. With continuous research in developing treatment for obesity, today scientists are focusing on development of vaccines to obesity and related problems. Two vaccines in this field have been developed that will target hormone somatostatin which is promoting weight gain. These vaccines have been successfully tested on experimental animals like mice. In mice it has been observed that the body weight has reduced up to 10 percent after treatment. These results are published in Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology.
After injection of these vaccines, they produce antibodies against somatostatin hormone and thus restrict the weight gaining process. The reduction in somatostatin levels within the body also helps in increasing the amount of two other hormones like growth hormone and insulin like growth factor. These two hormones promotes weight loss and thus helps patients with obesity.
Today’s obesity treatment includes use of drugs and surgery which are not completely curing the issues of obesity but also has some side effects. Therefore in such scenario, vaccines can come up with a new hope to treat obesity without side effects.
This is not the conclusion, but definitely a start of a journey to find suitable option to current obesity treatments like drugs and surgery.
