How important are internships? - Tanvi Aggarwal - 01-08-2016

Hello sir,
I am a 2nd year B.Tech Biotechnology student. I wanted to know how important it is to have an internship during the period of study. I am finding it hard to get one.
Is there any way I can enhance my chances of having a good career in the field without having an internship?

Benefits for Student through Biotechnology Job-Internship Program:
Student gains most while working as an intern, they acquire ample amount of new skills. In today’s competitive market, good internship provides an edge over other students to acquire more practical knowledge in less time along with opening many new options. Above all beside science, internship helps in building professional attitude as well as on their ability to perform the tasks with responsibilities
Science Skills Development for the logical thinking on the research projects. Developments of in-hand biological science process skills enable students to better understand science and perform better during interviews. As practical skilled knowledge is the most important aspect of technology driven science like Biotechnology or Bioinformatics. Above all we emphasis maximum on building the science fundamentals during our training program which add values to your knowledge and enable you to perform better in future
Acquiring Latest Knowledge is the most important aspect, as keep yourself updated with latest trends in technology like microarray / CHIP on chIP etc., helps in early identification of career trends with higher salary packages. For example in mid 90s molecular biology was considered as the most important aspect in research but presently in post genomic era along witrh molecular biology tools and technique, integration of vast knowledge and Data analysis generated by high throughput techniques are considered most important and challenging

Hi Tanvi,

It is always beneficial to get an internship or even a paid training during the breaks (summer/winter), no matter which year you are in. People look for your appetite for learning and extent of exposure through your industrial/research training profile. It will help you a lot in getting a good academic / industrial position in future.

Having said that, you can still make a career without internships, but that's not recommended. And it will be a tough question to respond to, when employers or scientists might ask the question about poor internship profile in your resume.

Hope it helps
