Employer Reputation - Does it impact my future prospects? - JB Cells - 04-11-2014

Does the reputation of the Pharma/Biotech company that you work for matter when you apply for another position in the sciences or quality departments? Specifically, if you work for a company that doesn't have a great reputation, will that hurt your chances of getting hired elsewhere?

I have been offered a position (no other offers yet) and am wondering if, because I just graduated and this is my first industry position, working for a company with a not so stellar reputation will kill my chances of being hired at other companies in the years to come?

Your dilemma is understandable, but I would rather say-"Getting an experience out of something is much better than sitting idle and doing nothing!"

The gap in employment after education hurts your chances of grabing a job proportionally to the delay. It might be a company of less repute, it might pay you less, but the most important thing you should worry about is --"what kind of job experience I'm going to procure from here?" If the experience is worth taking, go for it! Don't worry about the repute of the company. It my view, it's always about 'you' and 'your experience'.

The direct answer to your question is a big yes. The reputation of the company you work matters a lot. For instance, if a start up wants to hire any body they look for reputed organizations around so that if they can hire somebody who already knows the business and more often the job, so that they need not focus on training a new recruit,with new companies this is also a great dilemma for them too. For little reputed organization (not the big boys), they always look to hire somebody from a reputed organization to enhance their share value too. In the same manner when a good worker ( I mean one holding a critical portfolio) leaves a company the share value of the company also goes down. So the most valuable asset in an organization is the most mobile one ( Manpower) It is always the people who make the organization, in the initial days after that it is the organization which makes the people.
