Hey Tyson,
Even I have applied to both IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur. The dates for IIT Madras are 2nd - 3rd May, but the dates for IIT Kanpur tests aren't mentioned anywhere. Can you please tell me where you came across the IIT Kanpur dates. I hope m not missing out on anything important.

Thank you
Priyanka
Hello Priyanka,
u don't need to be tensed about that. IIT Kanpur hasn't released any dates of Written tests/Interview.I just asked that by seeing previous yrs. dates of intervw. If i get any info. i will inform u.
Thanks Sunil and Tyson for actively participating on the forum and sharing your advice/opinion.

Hi Priyanka,
You have received a very good rank, sharing your preparation tips on Gate BT 2016 thread will be greatly appreciated by our community.
Hello Sunil Bhaiya,
I have applied for only Environmental Engg. in IIT Madras but i saw yesterday that there were only 5-6 seats kept for it.I'm feeling quite tensed after seeing it.Have i got any chance? Plzz. reply.

Hi Tyson,

In most of the IITs, the maximum intake for Masters of any course doesn't go beyond 20-25. Many a times it remains around 10. I won't be surprised if the number of seats in Environmental Engg. course at IITM are restricted to 5-6 (in our case at IITD, it was only 4).

Should you be tensed? I would say no. But you should be concerned enough to ensure that your preparations for the written/interview are apt.

As I told you earlier, once you get a call for screening from an IIT, you are at the same level, as are other candidates (be it Rank 1 or Rank 1000). You need to look for getting that "1" seat for yourself. You have 100% chances (and so do other candidates). If your GATE score is above the cut-off, you will get a call for screening. And from there on, getting or not getting the admission would all depend upon your performance in screening. My experience of IIT Kanpur interview can be taken as the best example here: I had 99.6 percentile, I had cleared their written test, but I spoiled the interview: Resut-> I was not selected!

Hope it gives a clear picture to you. You can do it. Just focus on the fact that you need 'just 1 seat'.

Best wishes

Sunil
Hi Sunil sir i have selected for ctara iit bombay department for phd admission
pls give me some tips for written test/interview.
Hello Sunil

As I have earlier mentioned in this thread that I have qualified GATE XL 2015 with score 599 and AIR 181. I had applied for PhD in IIT Bombay, Jodhpur, Guwahati and Kgp but didn't get any interview call from IIT Bombay.

Just wanted to know that is my score not upto the mark of IITs or is it due to disparity in research interest. (I am a student of botany). Do I really don't have any chances of getting into IIT?

If you have any idea please let me know. I am really getting worried.

Thanks and Regards
Saumita

Hi Saumita,

Your score is well above the minimum requirement of every IIT for PhD. IIT Bombay's selection criteria remains a mystery (3 of my seniors, with over 3-5 years of industrial experience and GATE qualification didn't get the call from BSBE (though they got from Chemical Engg of IITB). They are planning to contact the admission cell/authority about the selection criteria. I suggest you to do so as well (also keep an eye on January intake of both IITB and IITM; and applications are often accepted throughout the year, on personal basis in most IITs to make for the vacant seats).

As suggested in my previous response to you, did you apply at IITD (Dr. AK Srivastava specifically works on Plant Biotechnology and Tissue culture), you could find a place under him. I suggest you to contact him and express your interest.

Also note that, preference is often given to NET/DBT qualified candidates over GATE for PhD (unless you possess a great GATE score). In your case, GATE score is great in my opinion (anything near 600 and above is awesome for admissions). Keep your hopes up for IIT Kgp (they actively work in the field related to Plant Tissue Culture).

Your MSc in Botany shouldn't be an issue (it's very well a branch of Life Sciences).

Your anxiousness and worry is expected. As a personal suggestion, do apply for NUS before May (application deadline details: http://in.biotechstudents.com/nus-phd-ap...-deadline/).

All the best!

Do let me know if I can help in any way possible.

Best wishes

Sunil
Thank you so much Sunil. No I didn't apply at IIT Delhi because due to some reasons presently I cannot stay at Delhi. Other than IIT I have also applied in IISC and JNCASR. Let's see what happens there.

Thank you so much once again.

Hi Mr Sunil

Do you have any idea why IITD and IITM have Written Test followed by Interview for Finalizing MS-R Candidates?

Preparation required for Written test is any different from Interview Preparation?

Any guidance on how to go about preparing for both would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sri
