Tips for Admission in National University of Singapore
#31
Hi Sunil,

I should really appreciate the awesome work done by you so far in guiding the students for the application process!
I have applied for the PhD program at NUS and my only concern is my low GRE score of 315 (exam jitters got better of me!) My
UG percentage is also a factor( though Calcutta University is notorious for the low marks). I hope to get a call from them !
I have decent LOR (from my guide at IIT B and the professor from my foreign internship). Would I be eligible for the A Star scholarship?

I think I have a decent enough profile for NUS (which going seems a bit liberal)!

Please find copy pasted my CV for the applications.(it might be tad too long) I did not want to hide any information

Hi Som,

Thanks for the appreciation :-) Having gone through your profile, I'm without any doubt that you'll grab the interview opportunity! I hope you have contacted some prof. there at NUS? He should be impressed by your profile. And, you should apply through the general application process too (apart from the ASTAR, for which your profile is indeed a perfect match!).

All the best!

Hi Sunil ,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply!
I have not contacted any professor at NUS since I applied through the general admission application system. Is it recommended to contact the Professors before the final decision?

I will keep you updated regarding the process.

Thank you once again for your help!

Thanks

Hello Som,

You may write a mail quoting that "you have already applied for PhD at NUS; and are really keen to pursue research on 'xyz' topic under the professor you find apt to your profile and interest. It would be a privilege working under xyz and you sincerely wish to be able to work under him/her. You would be highly obliged if xyz could usher hands of guidance and words of advice for your aspiration."

Contacting a scientist is always an adage to your profile, and I'm sure it would help you.

All the best!

Hi Abhinav

Yes one can get admission on basis of GATE score (refer this link for clarity: http://www.dbs.nus.edu.sg/education/graduates/faq.htm). And NUS always prefers to offer scholarship assistance to PhD candidates than MS® candidates. The chances of grabbing MS® are always good compared to PhD, but I would recommend going for PhD because of the TAship factor, quick progression of PhD at NUS, great job prospects etc.

Hope it helped.

Best Wishes

Sunil

Dear Sunil,
You are doing great job especially for the upcoming researcher by directing them at the right phase of their life to
right place i.e.NUS

I did my BSc Biotechnology:-University of Mumbai :- 63%-2012.
MSc Biotechnology-Fergusson College Pune(University of PUNE) 67%.-2014.

I did my dissertation work(6 months) at Premium Serums PUNE-one of the anti-snake venom serum producing industry. Title:- The Development of ELISA for determination of anti-cobra venom antibodies in Equines. no publication.
During my project i met Prof.R.M.Kini(Protein science Lab NUS). He helped me in development of scientific insight
while modifying cobra venom.in short i know him.

I always wanted to work with such Profesor. The work is still going on in industry. I left it for joining GRE Coaching because the industry is 80 km away from PUNE with very bad public transport.

what do you suggest in this situation. My parent don't know anything about NUS. so they are not agree with this idea. They asked me to perform well in CSIR/ DBT JRF.  How to handle this situation?
GRE/ TOEFL requirement?
What will the benefits of giving subject GRE(Biochem,Cell bio, genetics) for fellowship / assistantship   ?
Can this idea

Hi Sunil,

I am an Mtech Student of IIT Madras. I am going for Mtech project to South Korea from Jan- Mar end, I have applied for NUS (Aug intake), the shortlisted students will have interview in March during which I will be in Korea.

I wanted to ask if the Interview can be postponed OR will they conduct interview through skype/ online?

In the application, they have mentioned : "For foreign applicants who are not residing in P. R. China or India Where possible, the University may arrange an interview for you at the Singapore Embassy of the country in which you are residing. "

So If I want to give interview in South Korea during this time, will it be allowed with help of Singapore embassy there?

Hope the question is clear.

Thank you.

Hi Deepak,

Not sure about postponing, but YES there's a provision for the interview through Skype (telling by experience). You just need to raise a request for the same with admission cell. And most probably they may conduct interview at embassy as well  (provided they have the officials to conduct the same in the country). For both options you'll have to raise a request in prior.

Hope it helps

Best Wishes
