Thanks a lot for your reply. Will get in touch with the professors. One more thing.. for phd do i need to decide the topic now itself?

Hi Chirag,

Sorry for the late response. You need not to decide the topic but it's recommended that you do so, as it increases the chances of your selection. It actually reflects your conviction for the position, and how passionate you are to pursue a quality degree.

But as I mentioned in one of my posts, be prepared for the question "Would you still like to join us if we provide you a different project/topic?"

Hope it answers your query.

Best Regards
Sunil

I wanted to know your view on the same as mentioned above -
I scored a 97.8 percentile in the GATE 2014 (C.Sc. & IT) examination.
However, I have a (relatively) lower-off college score of 2.65/4.0 CGPA which is equivalent to about 66%. Would I be eligible for the M.Sc. by Coursework programme offered by NUS / NTU ? Despite having low scores, I have a good record of extra-curricular activities and work-ex (6-month internship at Reliance Infra + leading Investment Banking firm - both in the Tech field) and also as a Business Development Head at a startup for 5 months. Whilst my score is low, I believe it also qualifies as Second Class Honours (Upper Class or 2:1) as it is above 60% aggr.
Any advice you can proffer shall be highly looked upon and appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Vidyut

Hi Vidyut,

Sorry for the delayed response. Yes you can apply but keep the option of self sponsorship open (coursework programs often don't get scholarship aid). I would also suggest you to apply through ASTAR considering your overall profile. If you apply for PhD, I'm sure you'll get an interview call (if you contact a professor in advance).

Best wishes

Sunil

I will be giving my gate exam in 2015 but i need to apply for phD in NUS before hand. So i just needed to know can i apply directly for phD through GATE? or do i need to follow some other procedure? I am not getting a clear idea from university's site. please help.

Hi Chirag,
You will need a valid GATE qualification proof before applying for PhD admission. In case your result is awaited and you are sure of qualifying the exam, then you can apply for the admission by mentioning "Result Awaited/to be submitted during interview" at qualifying exam option. Also, it's recommended by NUS to contact the respective faculty admin and mention about your case before-hand. You may find the link to the contacts here: LINK TO CONTACS OF ADMINS AT NUS

I had applied for Jan 2015 PhD intake in NUS and got an interview call. Does that mean i got shortlisted or will they call everyone applied for interview?

My profile: UG - B.Tech Biotech (GPA- 8.95), GATE 2012 qualified (85 percentile),
PG- M.Tech Nanotech (GPA- 8.74) ,GRE (311), journal publications(2)

How about my chance of getting thro?

Hi,

First of all congratulations for the interview call ! They don't call everyone for the interview, and it was because of your very good GPA both in B.Tech and M.Tech, coupled with a good GRE score. Your journal publications will give you an edge over many I'm sure.

You are not shortlisted for the admission yet (your interview and a communication test will decide that). But, according to me, you have very high chances of grabbing a seat.

Best wishes

Hey Sunil, thanks a lot.Your posts have been really helpful.
I am a final year student of biotechnology in a private college(apparently one of the best colleges). The problem is my grades haven't been very good.,but I know that if I study well I can still do well in GATE since I have paid attention in all of my classes and my concepts are clear.I need to work hard.
I learnt that there is an eligibility criteria that you have to clear to get a call from the IITs even after you have cleared your GATE with a good score..Can you please please give me an idea of the criteria and the process of interview and counselling..? Are my average Btech grades going to be a problem ?? Please Please do reply.. Thank you

Hi Priankay...IITs keep a minimum cut-off of percentage in 12th and B.Tech as 60-75% (depends on IIT), so as long as your marks aren't below this average, you shouldn't worry a lot.

Once you have cleared GATE and have got a call for interview, you need to go through another written test at the IITs (a filtration process amongst the toppers) before you finally appear for interview. Interviews are often a mix of technical and aptitude test (technicality of interviews depends upon the research profile of the faculty members of the IIT).

If there's anything else you need to know, do let me know. And, it would be great if you could try posting GATE related queries in the thread related to GATE. It would help in maintaining the structure of the threads.

All the best!

Sunil

Hi Deepak,

Your score will expire in March 2015. So any application made prior to March 2015 will be "VALID". As the application process for January 2015 intake is already over (you could have applied for that using GATE 2013 score), you may give a shot to August 2015 intake whose application process is about to close for Research based programs.

As I keep saying, contacting a faculty expressing your interest will realy help to instill some confidence.

Feel free to clear anymore doubts.

Best Wishes

Sunil

Hi Sunil,

At the outset, great work helping out students like me in the admission process. Really appreciate it Smile
I did my Integrated MSc in Biology & Pharmacy from BITS Pilani. I have a CG of 8.34/10 overall but my core CGPA in Biology & Pharmacy courses is much higher.
My biggest worry is with the Publications part because I do not have any. I do have a couple of lab projects during my college but I do not have a proper JRF experience. However, for the past 1 year since I graduated, I have been been working at Leica Microsystems. They manufacture high end imaging systems like confocal microscopes. So could you please help me evaluate my overall profile? My GRE is 315. ( I know they prefer 320+ ) Yet to give GATE as well. Undecided Do I stand a fair chance for a PhD at NUS's DBS? Also, is TOEFL required for Indian students? I read in the website we are mostly exempted from it, but is it required to send them the Toefl scores as well?

Hi Sapthaswaran,

Thanks for the appreciation! Few years down the line, I'm sure you'll find a distinct pleasure in sharing your experience with the needy around..

First of all, having research publications is not a must for grabbing a seat in NUS. As a matter of fact, 2 of my juniors got direct admission to NUS ChBE for PhD, after their B.Tech (they had no experience, no research publications). All they had was a good GATE percentile (one of them had above 95percentile; and other above 92).
I would say that give a relaxed attempt to GATE BT/XL (I'm saying relaxed, because all you need to achieve is 90 percentile). Attempt only those questions in GATE which you are completely sure of; attempting for around 60 marks out of 100 will keep you at a safe enough position. And then it depends upon the difficulty level of the paper as well. If you find it difficult to answer the questions or questions seem bit tricky, then it would be so for everyone; and thus you should expect a low cut-off; and thus attempt accordingly. Donot panic and stay focused on the fact that if you attempt wisely, it's way to easy to crack 90 percentile.

And yes, if your mode of study in 12th and MSc was English, then you need not to appear for TOEFL/IELTS.

Your profile is better than many candidates against whom you would be competing; and it's possible that you might get a call even with the GRE score of 315. Try contacting professors at DBS through email and express your interest. You might find a guide who is willing to have you as a PhD scholar. This would ensure you a seat there.

Till then,..focus well on GATE  Smile

All the best

Best Regards

Sunil
