(03-22-2015, 04:58 AM)Pari18 Wrote: Hi Mr. Sunil

I have got gate rank 968(AIR) , score 391 and a percentile around 90.5-91% (Reserved Category). I did my B.tech in Biotechnology from DTU(DCE), New Delhi with 71.79%.
Also I have presented a paper in IIE International conference held in Phuket, Thailand and received best paper award.
What colleges do You suggest that i can apply for M.tech ??
Also can i apply for PhD in NTU, NUS or German University ??
Will it be a gud idea ? or is it just waste of time ? please suggest I am in great confusion here your help will be appreciated  Smile

Thank You Smile

Hello Pari,

It won't be a waste of time applying at NUS. Your profile is good and it can be considered.
Being in reserved category, you can apply for all IITs. Your academic profile is great for an undergraduate. IITB,IITD,IITK,IITKgp,IITM,IITGw all should be tried. Also apply for AcSIR PhD program.

Hope it helps

Best wishes

I have been placed in a job titled Clinical Data Analyst trainee. is it an emerging career with good pay scale?
is it advisable to gain some experience in the job and then continue studies.. since i planned to do mtech only to get a better job (i am not planning to try other IITs or NITs)

Hi Bavithra,

Two points need to be considered here:
a. Is your company of good repute? Career growth greatly depends upon the kind of company you are in. Small companies don't have employee friendly appraisal cycles. In the long run, you might end up with a smaller package if the company you are working for is not of good repute.

b. If your pay scale is below 2.4 lpa, it is advisable to go for studies. You can easily get IIT Madras (goes without saying that written and interview will have to be cracked). But getting a job after Masters from IIT Madras requires a good academic performance in most cases. The package won't be less than 5 lpa. If you think that your current job/field of work will land you above or near 5lpa two years from now, then donot go for Masters.

Another viable option is that you can continue with your job for 1 year (get to know the industry) and if you feel comfortable then you may continue. After 1 year of experience, you will easily get Masters in any IIT (your GATE score is valid for 3 years). And even NUS prefers experienced candidates for PhD (wherein the monthly stipend is over S$2000 pm; equivalent to near INR 1,00,000 per month). It will address your academic as well as financial needs

 Hope it helps

Best wishes

Sunil

thanks a lot sir! CTC would be 2.7 lpa initially and will go till 3.2 after a year, and there is 2 year bond. its even low for other companies. Since it is a core job, i don't want to miss the chance. I will write gate again for a better score.

after 2 years, will this job experience add value to mtech admission? IIT Madras offers only clinical biotech. what is the scope in terms of job opportunities?

is it good to do mtech in any other Regional college as well? is Teaching the only choice after that?
what scholarship/fees can I expect for PG in NUS or germany?
i am left with so many choices and not able to decide.. Please help me out

Hello Bavithra,

You may continue with your job. After 2 years just apply for a PhD at NUS. If one applies using GATE/GRE qualification at NUS/Germany, he/she doesn't have to pay any fee. Average scholarship received is not less than INR 1 lakh per month.

Avoid doing M.Tech from a regional college, especially when you have GATE qualification with you. If you want to go for M.Tech, you should pursue from an IIT. If you want to go for PhD in future, then better by-pass M.Tech and directly enroll for a PhD after your job experience (again, pursue it either from an IIT or NUS/Germany). Meanwhile ensure that you go for some conferences, present some posters, or get one or two research/review papers.

Teaching is not the only option after PhD. You can get some administrative jobs in research firms, can become a scientist in CSIR labs/institutes (only if you pursue PhD from an institute of repute). Teaching being the safest route is finally taken up by most people. Jobs are there for PhD people, but they are often not in plenty (considering the large pool of PhDs graduating these days. Competition is stiff in job sector for PhDs, but deserving ones always get their share!).

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Hello Mr Sunil

I just came to know from Gate office that the total no of candidates in BT for this year is 8923. This kind of puts me in a 'touch and go' situation - My Percentile on this basis (my rank 452) is 94.93. This is surprising to me given the fact that the cut-off is almost the same as of 2014 (students appeared in 2014 10714). Based on your experience, could you tell me if this changes the admission scenario for me or I can still expect calls from IITs like M, KNP, KGP, G, H & Delhi.

Also, what are your thoughts are ME Biotech offered by BITS ?

Thank You

Sri

Hello Sri,
IIT Bombay has already set the cut-off for GATE score as 400. If your score is above the given cut-off then IITB is in. As far as IIT Kanpur is concerned, it was 95 percentile and above during my time (no. of candidates appeared were more than 16000); but given the current scenario of very low footfall, let us expect a lenient cut-off from IITK as well. IIT Delhi has mentioned in it's prospectus that a minimum GATE score of 300 is mandatory for applying for PG/PhD. This keeps you in for IITD as well. For rest of the IITs, you will definitely get a call (atleast I'm  nearly sure about it).

IITD and IITB are the only two IITs that keep the cut-offs strict. Infact, IITD rarely takes more than 8 students for Masters (in my case only 4 students were taken).

BITS pilani is the only BITS that I would recommend. But considering the fact that you can easily get into an IIT, I suggest you to focus on IITs and NUS.

Hope it helps

Best wishes

Hello Trinanjan,

Congrats for qualifying GATE! You may apply at IITB, IITD (Delhi often sets high GATE cut-offs but their prospectus says that a minimum score of 300 is mandatory, which means that you can apply at IITD), IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, (Hopefully IIT Kanpur), IIT Roorkee and IIT Madras.

For a good PhD, do consider the AcSIR (CSIR labs' PhD program). And as you must have been aware that you are eligible to apply at NUS as well. So do apply at all these institutes/universities.

Do let me know if you have any other query.

Best wishes

Sunil

Thank you so much sunil bhaiya...

I know that u have very good experiences regarding the admissions specially in IITs, I have read all your articles and it really motivated me.

So can you please give me some interview tips and questions as this will be my first time?
And I also lack a bit of confidence as my rank is not that good to get into an IIt
