GATE Advice to Low Scorers
#1
This thread has been one of the most preferred platforms for GATE Biotechnology Discussions. The thread starts with invaluable suggestions for best utilization of GATE BT Scores. Feel free to post your queries about GATE BT/XL here.

Hi all,

Lately, I have been receiving mails from many of the members of biotechnologyforums (India) to shed some tips on procuring a seat in IITs. Well, I'm sorry for the delay, (was over occupied with my new job), but here I'm!

Note: The main focus of this article is to ensure that all GATE qualified students do apply at other departments as well (apart from their core field of Biotechnology).

As, I said in my Previous Post it's very easy to crack GATE and it's really easy to get a seat too, only if you do it the right way.

Just keep a note of following things if you have cracked GATE:

1. If your GATE score/marks are just touching the cut-off (i.e marginally above the cut-off), apply at:

CTARA (Center for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas) at IIT Bombay and CRDT IIT Delhi (You'll definitely get a call).

2. If you are at 90 percentile (or around 93 percentile): 1st of all apply at NUS! It's much better than IITs! Then, consider applying at :

Department of Pulp and Paper Technology IIT Roorkee
Environmental Engineering IIT Roorkee
Goes without saying for CTARA and CRDT

3. If you are above 95 percentile do apply at:
IIT Guwahati (all departments you are eligible for)
IIT Delhi Chemical Engineering
IIT Madras Biochemical/Biotech (though it varies between 95-97 percentile as cut-off)
IIT Delhi Atmospheric Sc.
IIT Kanpur Environmental
IIT Kharagpur (apply all departments you are eligible for)
Goes without saying for NUS, IIT Roorkee, CTARA and CRDT

4. Above 98 percentile but below 99 percentile you may not get a call from only the following:
IIT Kanpur Biomedical
IIT Bombay Biomedical
IIT Delhi Biochemical

Once you get a call, it's all about being crystal clear of your concepts and confidence during interview (your GATE score matters least there). You can make it or you may mar it, it's all upto "the way you act (during applying for IITs and during interview equally".

Hope it solves some confusions.

Let me know if I can help in some other way(s).

Cheers!

Sunil

Hello sir,
I have B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from NIT Bhopal with CGPA 7.95(79.5%).
I have secured 98.86 percentile in Gate 2015.
I wish to apply to NUS for January term next year.
Can u please tell me what are my chances?
Also I am in dilemma whether to go for masters in course work or research.
Do I have equal opportunities of getting jobs in either courses?

Thanks in advance.

It seems that you are looking for good universities abroad to carry out your post graduate studies. It is a good option as getting into top institutes in India i.e. in IITs and IISc and study M. Tech in top subjects is a difficult task because of the extreme competition. It is easier to get into Master of Engineering programs in European countries such as Germany, France or other countries as education is free and you can get good scholarships. Apart from Europe you can also look for universities in Australia, US, Canada, New Zealand etc.

But, you have to look at the University websites carefully for eligibility criteria as they may vary from University to University. In general a good academic score is required with other examinations like GRE, TOEFL or IELTS. Universities of UK and Australia do not require GRE.

As for GATE score validity in foreign countries, Universities in Singapore (NTU & NUS) and Germany (TUM & RWTH) accept GATE scores. Go to the following links:-

Hi Tyson,

You should get a call from IIT Kanpur. Apply at some other department (apart from Biomedical Engg in IITB) to get a call from IITB. Centre for Environmental Sciences / Dept of Chemical Engg can be options. IITB's Biomedical Engg course often asks for GATE score of above 600, so getting a call from IITB is often difficult. Let's hope for a lenient cut-off this year.

Best wishes

Hello Sri,

Your percentile should be above 95 (assuming a footfall of minimum 10,000 students in GATE BT). At this percentile you have healthy chances of getting calls from IITK, IITM, IITKgp and IIT Guwahati.

As per my experience, prospects of getting call from IITB are bleak. But if you really want to pursue a course in IITB, then you may apply at CTARA of IITB.

And as I advice to every above 90 percentiler, do not loose this opportunity of applying at NUS (GATE cut-off just 90 percentile). You will get an interview call for sure if you support your application with strong LORs.

Hope it helps

Let me know if you have some other query.

Best Regards

Sunil

Thank You Mr Sunil. As per info in IITB website, the cut off for Bio-Medical Engineering is 400 - I am not sure of job prospects for Bio-Medical Engineering. Your inputs on Job Opportunities in Industry and Teaching (within India) would be greatly appreciated. Also, Kindly advise if I stand a chance at IIT Hyderabad and Delhi. Thanks again

Hi Sri,

Well, a cut-off of 400 opens opportunity for many aspirants and it's great that IITB kept a lenient cut-off. If your GATE score is above 400, then without any doubt you should start preparing for their written test/interview.

And IITB and IITD are amongst the best IITs in the country. I am sure that IITD will keep a lenient cut-off too (as per the preliminary info that I could see at IITD website, a minimum score of 300 has been prescribed for admission to Masters and PhD courses in IITD across the institute.

You will get call from IIT Hyderabad without any doubt. It's a newly established IIT but it would be having a world class campus (Japan being the infrastructure head for it). Faculty is good there. As of now, the campus is under construction.

Job prospects are many after a degree from IIT. Average package goes around 7-8 lpa (IITD and IITB). Biocon, Dr. Reddy, Novozymes, Wockhardt, TRDDC, Abott, Consultancy firms are key industries. Teaching is always up and open for IIT graduates/PG/PhDs. More importantly, you will have all doors open to pursue a good PhD from a university abroad (Germany/UK/US/Singapore).

In short, your career woes would decrease drastically!

Hope it helps

Best wishes
