Need your advice and some guidance please.

My daughter is currently studying M.Tech in Biotechnology from NIT Rourkela and will complete in June 2016.

If we wish to admit her in NSU, Singapore for her PHD in Biotechnology.

1. Which Intake Period (August 2016 or January 2017 or August 2017) is appropriate and recommended for her PHD, assuming her M.Tech result will not be declared before June 2016?
2. Depending on the intake period, can she use her existing GATE-Biotechnology February 2014 score (All India Rank of 292, percentile = 97.27%) or will she have to again appear for GATE in February 2016?

Arup

Thank you.
is a gate percentile of 84.3 valid enough to fetch a good job or a college for PhD also does it make a difference if we dont have a publication yet we want to apply for phd in NUS?
can a student with gate percentile of 84 apply for the phd programme in NUS or other colleges in INDIA ?
and does it matter if we dont have a publication to enroll into Phd programme in NUS?
If you are trying to apply in India then you can get enrolled for PhD programs with any GATE Score depending on the University or Institute you are applying for. With 84 percentile you can apply in any medium grade Universities and Institutes in India. Moreover, in top Universities and Institutes also there are many projects that require only a valid GATE score in appear for the interview and you can get selected irrespective of the percentile.

In NUS having a publication is not mandatory to apply for a PhD program. But, of course if you have a publication then you will have a better chance to get an admission. However, a good GRE, TOEFL / IELTS score is mandatory.

Hello Sunil/Admin,

Would appreciate your response to my above query.

Hi Mam,

Sorry for the delayed response. Your daughter should first apply for August 2016 intake (applications will start by May 15, 2015 and shall continue till November 2015). This would let her utilize her GATE 2014 score card which would expire in March 2016. The interviews for August 2016 intake would be organized in January-February 2016 (her GATE 2014 score card would be valid till then). To ensure a back-up, she should appear for GATE 2016 as well. Applications for January 2017 intake would last till May 2016 (ample time to apply for the January 2017 intake using GATE 2016 results).

There is no worry about the declaration of the results. They will seek marksheets till penultimate semester only. Once the results are declared, she should ensure that she takes all her documents along.

Although she can apply for January 2016 intake as well, but completing M.Tech would definitely add to her resume/strength.

Hope it helps

If there's anything else that I can help with, do let me know.

Best wishes

Sunil

Thanks so much for all your valuable inputs!

I just received an interview call from DBS for PhD on March 20th 2015. Could you please quickly guide me through the interview process?

Will the interview be a technical one? Is there any way we can better our chances for an admission at NUS?

And importantly, after the interview how do they generally decide whom to offer admission and deny?

Any tips/guidance will be great. Thank you

Hi Sapthaswaran,

Congrats for the interview call. You may refer the main article of this thread at:

Hi Abhi,

This is a wonderful thread and I am deeply interested in pursuing scientific career. I am doing my MSc (final semester) in Biotechnology (current CGPA - 6.5/10) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and I secured AIR-15 in the Common Entrance Exam For Biotechnology (CEEB) held each year by JNU in 2013.
I also acquired AIR-1 in Int-PhD exam for Genomics at Madurai Kamaraj University and have also cleared CSIR (LS) with AIR-36. Can I include these examinations in my national achievements given in the NUS form? Moreover I have appeared for GATE-2015 and am hoping for its result to be positive. What else can I plan for making my CV stronger? What kind of an essay do they expect us to write for getting an admission in NUS? And what scholarship should I apply to over there?

Hi Nikhil,

Yes "you can and you must" mention all your feats; and these achievements will definitely strengthen your resume. Essay should be about your research aspirations and what have you done till date in that regard; and what you plan to do if you get admitted in NUS.

You will be considered for TAship by default, so worrying about scholarship at this point of time is not an important issue.

Hope it helps

Best wishes
